For the first time…

This item was filled under [ Bits & Pieces, Life Lessons ]

For the first time… someone offered me a seat on the MRT yesterday! :)

Haha… was quite shocked! As this means that I am finally looking pregnant, and not just FAT. Haha! :)

After thanking the lady who offered me her seat, I settled into my newfound seat contentedly.

Until my mother-in-law (who was taking the MRT with me) pointed out to me later, “It is so disgraceful that it is an older lady who offered you a seat and not some of the younger women or the men.”

And then I thought… yeah, that’s true. Looking around me, there were actually scores of people who look younger than the lady who offered me her seat. The lady was probably in her mid 40s, if not late 40s. And she was carrying this huge plastic bag that looks quite heavy.

I guess, it’s because the lady herself has gone through childbearing, and understand how much a pregnant woman would appreciate a seat. While the younger ones probably have not undergone that. As for the men, obviously, they never had, and would never have the experience. :)

Relating the experience to Jamie later…

“Hey! You better make sure you offer your seat to pregnant ladies ok?!?”

:)

hehe just wear maternity dresses in the mrt

i think this happens all over the world. was reading a short joke in readers digest where this pregnant lady was in the tube and nobody got up to offer her a seat, despite everyone sitting somewhat comforatbly apart from each other.

so this really big muscled and fat guy gets really irritated. he lowers his bum towards a seat in front of the lady, at which point the people sitting there moves away to make room.

then he squirms a bit somemore to make more room, and then he gets up and offers the lady the newly won seat!

I’ve been in a situation where I don’t know whether to offer a seat to someone. This is because I can’t figure out if the person is pregnant or has a big tummy! Honestly! The difference can mean getting a thank you or an offended look! What a conundrum.

And then there are women in baju kurung and I can’t tell if they are pregnant or not! What should one do under those circumstances?

Best bet is to stand even if there’s an empty seat so that pregnant ladies and old people get a seat once they get on the train! Haha..

    S-
Hehe… actually I have been wearing maternity dresses for a while now, but probably previously I did not look pregnant enough? :) Hehe!

    Kea-
Yeah, I understand your dilemma. I guess as S suggested, the safest is to offer to ladies in maternity dresses… haha… you can’t miss them – those that have a ribbon tied to the back! :)

Anyway, I got offered a seat today again this morning! :) This time by a married man (saw his jade gold ring) probably in his 40s or 50s. Think people are generally courteous and civic-minded. :)

think a lot of pple are real idiots. do they consider for one moment that their own mother, sister, daughter, could be the pregnant lady looking for a seat in a bus/mrt/public place.

i will wonder how they wrestle with their conscience if the lady stumbles.

and all this in the midst of the ‘smiles’ campaign in preparation for the world bank and IMF.

i should think the govt shd get it’s priorities right…

perhaps they should levy fines on these rude people.
    maybe that’ll get a response.
(oops is this too long a reply…? paiseh.)

    Hey Andrew! :)

Calm down… take a kit kat! Hehe! :) I think there are quite a lot of considerate people out there. But sometimes maybe as Kea has said, they are not sure if the lady is really pregnant or just on the plump side… :)

On the update of seat offerings, today, not one but TWO people actually offer me seat! :) Hehe, and they are young ladies…! :)

Whenever usually take the MRT standing up, even if there are some available seats. The only time I get to sit is when the train is almost half-empty.

It always irritates me when I see young guys sitting in a crowded MRT looking the other way while there are women standing in front of them holding on to dear life.
